Two habits make the difference between a class that plays and a class that learns. First, ask for a prediction before students build: predict the area, predict what the agent will do, predict the product of a reaction. The build then tests the prediction instead of replacing the thinking. Second, require an explanation afterward, in writing or in a short presentation, because explaining why is where the understanding consolidates and where you, as the teacher, get something concrete to assess.
